The Periodical: Exposing Period Poverty in the U.S.
The average woman will spend 10 years of her life on her period and spend upwards of $18,000 on period products during her lifetime. For many, periods are no more than a recurring, necessary nuisance. But for those who can’t afford period products, the inability to manage this burden poses a serious threat to their dignity and ability to participate in society. This lack of access to menstrual products is commonly referred to as period poverty.
The Periodical is a broadsheet newspaper that works to shed light on period poverty in the U.S., create empathy in viewers, and ignite them into action with tangible resources. This project is my senior capstone completed as part of the BFA communication design program at WashU in St. Louis.
